Rescue on the Reef
The party sailed to a wrecked ship on a corrupted reef, met Corelia the ocean dryad who had saved the survivors, and agreed to help stop the unnatural poisoning of her domain. They fought waves of monstrous sea creatures while rescuing sailors and supplies, ultimately escaping as a massive tentacled threat dragged Corelia under, leaving the party shaken but successful.
Recap
Word spread quickly through the outpost that Captain Embercrest required volunteers. A supply vessel bound for the Wildermarch had gone missing near the offshore reef, and what little wreckage had been sighted suggested survivors - but also danger. Bottled breath was prepared, skiffs made ready, and by mid-morning a small expedition gathered at the docks.
Two newer figures joined the party.
Sir Ancel, a self-styled knight of unmistakably Arthurian bearing, cut a strange figure even by Wildermarch standards - ivy-woven hair, autumn-tinted skin, and one eye a solid, pupil-less green. Gentle of voice and careful in word, he had spent weeks avoiding the camp proper, sleeping in the wilds and trading only when necessary.
Ozemon, a tiefling sorcerer with shaved horns and a sharp chip on his shoulder, had arrived only days earlier. He kept mostly to himself, burying his nose in books, though his fire-leaning magic and quick tongue soon made an impression.
Before departure, a brief conflict flared at P. Fiddlesticks’ supply tent when Sir Ancel requested healing potions - politely, but without coin. Tempers cooled only after Ozemon intervened forcefully, reminding the artificer of the value of cooperation on the frontier. In the end, three potions were secured, and Kouzlo completed his morning ritual, brewing a slightly unstable but effective arcane coffee and preparing a ritual of Water Breathing for the voyage.
The skiff pushed off under Aldric’s steady hand, threading its way through jagged coral formations that seemed wrong - grown too fast, frozen mid-bloom, and echoing the same corruption seen upriver at the Great Tree. As winds rose and waves battered the hull, Sir Ancel moved to the prow, guiding Aldric through instinct and intuition rather than map or compass.
A sudden gust sent chaos across the deck. Ozemon, attempting to adjust a fouled line, was dragged overboard before being hauled back by the combined efforts of the party - and Aldric’s summoned steed, Luminor. Soaked, shaken, but intact, the group burst free of the storm into eerily calm waters.
There, encircled by a ring of coral, lay the wreck.
The ship was damaged beyond sailing, its crew sheltering aboard. Kouzlo promptly lost his breakfast over the rail. Aldric heard voices - Elvish, but warped by an unfamiliar cadence. Ozemon crept closer through the coral and came face to face not with a sailor, but with something older.
She rose from the water like a living tide: hair floating as if submerged, eyes shining like sunlight on waves, coral and seaweed woven into her form. Not elf. Not merfolk. Something akin to a dryad - but bound to reef and sea rather than forest and root.
She named herself Coralia of the Coral Coast.
She accused the sailors of damaging her reef, of poisoning land she had sworn to protect for millennia. Yet it was clear she had also saved them - slaying sea spawn that attacked the wreck and sheltering the survivors as best she could. Sir Ancel spoke for the group, offering aid and recompense. After a long moment, Coralia agreed.
The reef was sick. Something unnatural had taken hold, particularly near a pale “white reef” deeper below. Creatures no longer obeyed her will. If the party would help end the corruption, she would grant them her favor - and safe passage along the coast henceforth.
The agreement was sealed just as the sea itself rose in warning.
A massive wave slammed into the wreck, scattering supplies and sailors across coral and deck alike. From the depths came attackers: harpoon-wielding sea spawn, manta-like horrors that burst into alchemical goo when slain, and worse shapes moving beneath the surface.
The fight was chaos.
- Kouzlo’s magic missiles dropped the first flying aberration - only for its corpse to explode and restrain allies in sticky ichor.
- Aldric hurled javelins and waded into danger, Luminor trampling sea spawn beneath radiant hooves.
- Sir Ancel fought like a storybook knight dragged into a nightmare, surviving on sheer will after being harpooned and dragged toward the surf.
- Ozemon’s lightning tore through clustered enemies, his magic finally unleashed without restraint.
- Coralia herself fought while bound, dissolving into coral and reappearing where she was needed most, stabilizing wounded sailors even as the battle raged.
Despite their efforts, sailors fell - dragged screaming into the water, limbs torn away by the harpooners. As the last sea spawn was cut down in a flurry of steel, spell, and divine wrath, the sea answered with something far worse.
Tentacles - massive, questing - rose from the deep.
With only moments to spare, the party turned from battle to rescue. Supplies were hastily gathered: blacksmithing tools, potion crates, scroll cases. Aldric mounted Luminor to ferry the wounded. Kouzlo blinked supplies closer to the boat through bursts of magic. Ozemon dashed through danger to pull survivors free.
Tentacles slammed into coral and deck alike. One struck at Ozemon and missed by inches. Another seized Coralia.
She did not scream.
Instead, she hurled her coral-forged trident onto the deck of the party’s ship. “Go. You always have a friend on the reef.”
Then she was pulled beneath the waves.
Suddenly the source of the tentacles burst forth - a massive octopus rose from the water poised to take the ship into its grasp. However the party’s retreat was just fast enough, and the skiff broke free of the coral ring, racing for open water.
Behind them, the reef vanished into churning foam.
The expedition returned battered but alive.
- 4 sailors rescued, one we shall mourn
- 2 crates of the ship’s supplies recovered (blacksmith and potions), one left behind (scrolls)
- Coralia’s fate: unknown
The Wildermarch had claimed its due - but not all of it.
