Explore South of Camp
The party journeyed south through the freshly planted moon corn fields, discovering a clean river and attempting to build an aqueduct. Continuing to the coast, they battled giant crabs and uncovered a washed-ashore sea monster, harvesting its hide and venomous claw as trophies.
Recap
Three new travellers arrived at the N.O.D.E. camp today. Jorath Nightbloom, the High Elf Wizard, could not be happier to step off the ship, vowing never to turn his stomach upon the high seas again. The Half-Elf Bard Saim Elyod offered him some words of comfort, and the two were soon joined by Arkose Marl, an eccentric Desert Druid of ambiguous species, who had made her way to the camp by joining a caravan as a wild-shaped pack mule. Arkose and Jorath exchanged shared feelings of mistrust and condemnation for large bodies of water and bonded over a shared appreciation for books. At the camp the new recruits were greeted by Lorvial, the Dwarven Cleric, who filled them in on the company’s recent excursions into the wilderlands.
The next morning the four met with Captain Marinn, a red-haired Dwarf with a neatly trimmed beard who suggested the party explore the area to the south of camp. The group headed out thusly, and after some time came across a fertile field that looked perfect for growing food for the camp. Jorath had brought a collection of seeds from the Nocturne Conservatory where he was raised and suggested this field would be an ideal place to grow Moon Corn, a purple grain that thrives in moonlight.
After walking a bit further the party found a river cutting through the grasslands. The water seemed clean and almost unnaturally invigorating, and yet there were no signs of any animals frequenting the area. The bottom of the river appeared to host many small glowing creatures, which Jorath enthusiastically collected for further study. Arkose and Jorath set about developing plans to build a mill and an aqueduct to support the corn field, but Lorvial spotted a concerning group of creatures on the beach where the river emptied into the ocean.
The crew made their way down to the beach where they discovered four giant crabs feasting on the remains of what appeared to be an enormous kelp-like sea serpent. The party readied themselves to clear the area and engage the wolf-sized crustaceans. Arkose wild-shaped into an Axe Beak, which Jorath mounted to ride into battle, Saim played a magical lullaby to put half the crabs to sleep, and Lorvial blessed the group with a divine prayer.
The fight seemed to be under control until a massive crab crawled out of the reef and began grappling with the squawking Arkose and her rider Jorath. Two more crabs appeared from the rocks on the beach, keeping Saim and Lorvial occupied as the monster hard-shell slowly dragged the avian cavalry toward the water with its venomous claw. Arkose fought hard to keep her rider safe as Jorath rained bolts of magic upon the invertebrate consortium, but he came close to falling prey to the behemoth. Saim spoke a healing word to the wizard, allowing him to escape back up the beach as Lorvial ran to support his comrades.
As Arkose was dragged into the surf (a horrifying position for one so averse to water), she suffered a major blow from the mammoth crab, causing her to revert back to her original form. As she retreated back to the dry sand, Lorvial reached his compatriots and, placing himself between them and the crab, taunted the giant who was attempting to escape back to its home on the reef. The beast turned and charged back up the beach where the now-united party turned the huge crab into rangoon with a final synchronized attack.
The beach now secured, the group harvested a multitude of useful items from the battle. The sea serpent was liberated of its hide, seaweed was gathered to make durable rope, and a basket of coral as hard as steel was collected. Arkose broke off pieces of the crab’s shell to make a hat and Jorath took samples of the claw’s venom for further study. Inside the sea serpent Lorvial found a sealed bottle with a note written in a Draconic script, but the party was unable to translate the message immediately. Saim packed up all the crab meat they could carry, and the cohort prepared to head back to camp.
Before leaving the party noted a series of sea caves nearby that warranted further investigation, but they were made inaccessible by the tides for the time being.
