Investigate the big mysterious tree near the cave

The party investigated a corrupted forest at the urging of chwingas and discovered a massive, dying tree tainted by necromantic energy. After battling slimes within its roots and restoring a wounded heart with a magical seed, the adventurers helped the Great Tree begin to heal, earning the chwingas' gratitude and enchanted gifts.

Recap

After reports of strange magic and corrupted water near the forest, a new expedition set out to investigate. Newcomers Kouzlo and Aldric stepped off the boat and into the path of Shadow and Quick. Fresh off an earlier expedition, Shadow and Quick brought the latest arrivals up to speed, warning the pair of the contamination threatening the river's water supply and the local chwingas’ interest in us exploring the large tree. The newly formed party set a plan: investigate the mysterious great tree deeper within the forest and explore any potential connections to the blight.

At dawn, the group followed the river into the thickening woods. The canopy grew dense enough to dim the sunlight, and a creeping mist soon swallowed the trail. Aldric's Divine Sense flared - something undead was near. Ghostly lights flickered through the trees, striking a separated and disoriented Kouzlo with crackling energy before the party managed to regroup and flee. The lights chased them until they stumbled into a vast clearing, where the corruption’s hold seemed to falter. There stood the Great Tree: towering, ancient, and sickly - its bark crumbling, its branches heavy with sorrow.

The chwingas that had once danced through the forest appeared again, guiding the party toward the tree. Through gestures, they revealed their home’s pain and pointed to the tainted river. When one of the spirits touched the water and lost a finger to the corruption, Kouzlo’s arcane senses confirmed it - necromantic energy had seeped into the land. Quick, exploring near the tree’s roots, accidentally discovered an entrance. The tree itself seemed to recognize him, sharing a memory of its former golden splendor before opening a passage for the others to follow.

Inside the tree’s heart, three tunnels led deeper into its structure. The party split to explore, finding both healthy roots and corrupted sap that oozed from the walls like liquid malice. After choosing one of the paths to explore further as a group, their investigation was cut short when massive slimes attacked from the ceiling. The battle was chaotic but decisive: Quick’s arrows and Kouzlo’s magic tore through the creatures, Shadow darted between slimes, and Aldric nearly perished as he found himself endlessly surrounded by the creatures. When the last slime fell, the entire tree seemed to exhale in relief as the corrupted slime receded.

At the path's end, a pool of sap cradled a single glowing seed. The chwingas retrieved it and guided the party back to a second path under the tree with a wounded section of the tree, its root torn open like an old scar. After support and fortifications from the party, Shadow braved the corruption and magical traps of the tunnel to deliver the seed to the wound. The seed was absorbed, healing the wound and sending a golden pulse of vitality through the tree. Outside, the Great Tree straightened slightly, new leaves shimmering in the light. In gratitude, the chwingas gifted the party runed stones imbued with heroism, along with other boons of the tree’s renewal. Though not yet whole, the Great Tree lived again - and the first signs of hope returned to the forest.

Next Steps

All signs point to the source of the water's blight being inside the nearby cave. An expedition will be required soon to gather more information. A future point of interest was also discovered beneath the tree. The third path was blocked off during the whole expedition - dense healthy vines blocked the doorway but the sound of clean running water could be heard within. The chwingas were protective of this path. The party's best guess was this path leads to some kind of protected, still-healthy heart of the tree trying to defend itself from the corruption. The party believed it best to first investigate the cave, hoping a resolution to the water contamination would open this path.
